Forwarder.com - Carriers 'scaremongering' over box shortage
Carriers delaying Asia-Europe peak season surcharges (PSSs) and general rate increases have been accused of R20;scaremongeringR21; over the container shortage. Although volumes had increased in line with peak season expectations, space can still be found on vessels and the container shortage has yet to have an impact. As a result carriers have been delaying PSSs and GRIs. However, the peak season R11;traditionally July to the end of September R11; had only just started and space could tighten as it progressed. So far, only one major carrier has implemented a GRI of around $200 per teu. All other increases have been deferred until 15 July, although the word in the market is that the majority will defer again, until 1 August. Space is tight but manageable, and despite a lot of scaremongering there arenF0;t any equipment issues.
