Efforts are being made to open PuneF0;s Lohegan airport to international cargo flights.
Local reports said that Pune Customs has applied this week for regulatory approval for the airport to expand its cargo coverage to cover international shipments. A 4ha site is being considered for a new 500sq mtr air cargo complex, but in the short-term, existing facilities including a 40sq mtr warehouse used for domestic cargo movements could be developed for international fights with the addition of cargo sheds and x-ray machines. The report also said that some 40% of the cargo moved through the Mumbai port of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which has been struggling with congestion delays recently, originates in the Pune area .
